Fun facts:

Halloween

The word Halloween comes from All Hallow Even, the eve of All Saints Day. Halloween is said to have its origins in a Celtic festival – Samhain. The Celts were a people who lived in Great Britain and France. This people thought the night of October 31st signaled the beginning of an important celebration that marked:

- the end of the harvests;

- New Year’s Celtic Eve;

- the beginning of winter.

They believed winter was the beginning of a period of time associated with the dead. According to them, on Halloween it was possible to get in touch with the world of the dead because people believed that on this night ghosts, fairies and demons were at large.

To deal with this supernatural chaos, the Celts disguised themselves with skins and heads of animals killed for the winter. There were also other traditions such as making bonfires to ward off spirits.

In Portugal, Halloween is mostly celebrated by children and teenagers who go from house to house trick-or-treating and go to the streets to make mischief.

Halloween, mostly known as the Night of the Witches, is celebrated on the night of October 31st, the eve of All Saints day, November 1st. Its name comes from All Hallow Even, the eve (night before) All Hallows day. Therefore, Halloween is celebrated on the eve of All Saints Day.

This festival is said to have its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which consisted in people lighting bonfires and wearing ghost and dark costumes. Halloween was formerly celebrated to mark the beginning of the winter, nowadays it’s a festivity, especially dedicated to children, a day when they can wear scary costumes and go from door to door trick-or-treating.

The celebration of Halloween started to be a funny night where children would trick people with eggs and toilet paper when adults wouldn’t give to them sweets. But it isn’t only the trick or treat activity that is done on this night, because Halloween is a typical festival that includes innumerous activities like attending costume parties, decorating houses, carving scary pumpkins into lanterns, lighting bonfires, playing pranks and visiting haunted houses.

This holiday increased the sales of children’s costumes. It’s one of the most popular festivities in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada, but as time went by,  other countries, like Portugal,  started to celebrate it.

This night arouses superstitions, such as: avoiding crossing paths with black cats, not walking under the ladders, avoiding breaking mirrors or spilling salt because people believe they will bring bad luck. Pumpkins, corn husks and scarecrows are symbols of this night.
